Bluets

BluetsThe semi-chiaroscuro background, the baroque values of the figure, and the art-deco style of the flowers, join this painting’s trinity.  It is a portrayal of female empowerment.  The aggressive facial expression, boldness of her nude stance, and the wild flowers combine to symbolize the non-domestication of the creature.

When bluets first came to me, I visualized a school of tiny blue flowers dancingly floating through the air, which in the instance action was necessary -  coalesced – into this very solid, powerful woman.

This becomes the first in a series of evolving entities that come to me in rushing images, which I then accordingly name after the color of flower, followed by “-ets”.

Truck #2

Truck #2I am drawn to old, rusting vehicles that I spot on my travels. Particularly, I’m attracted to obvious signs of abandonment. Rust, discoloration, flattened tires, missing or broken parts, all provide a richness and texture that catch my attention.  I usally work these subjects from photographs, and emphasize the rendition of the details I just mentioned.  Often the physical signs of abandonment in the photograph also include overgrown vegetation.  Yet,  I choose to depict the trucks in complete desolation, inspired by Dalian landscapes.  18×24″  oil on canvas
